Add a competitor

The competitors you picked when you signed up are already on the list. To add another:

  1. Open Competitors and click Add competitor.
  2. Type the competitor's website, like competitor.com. ByDefault fills in the name from the address. Click Name to change it.
  3. Add Synonyms and pick Topics if you need them. Both are optional.
  4. Click Add competitor.

ByDefault tracks each website once. If you add one twice, you see "Already tracking that competitor".

To change a competitor, click its row, edit it and click Save. To remove one, hover its row, click the trash icon and confirm Stop tracking. Its synonyms and topics go with it.

Synonyms

Synonyms are other names a brand goes by, like its product names. When an AI answer uses a synonym, ByDefault counts it as a mention of that competitor. Type one and press Enter or a comma to add it. On the list, Add synonyms opens the competitor with the cursor already in that field.

A name only counts when the answer means that company. The same word used for something else doesn't count, and neither does a brand that only appears in a link or a list of sources.

Your brand sits at the top of the list. Click it to change its name, website and synonyms. When ByDefault writes articles, it treats your synonyms as your own products.

Group by topic

Topics are groups of prompts, and you create them on Prompts. The list groups competitors by topic.

  • ByDefault tracks a competitor with no topics for every prompt. It sits under All topics.
  • Pick topics in the Topics chip to pin a competitor to them. ByDefault then tracks it only for prompts in those topics, and it shows under each one.
  • Prompts without a topic track only the competitors under All topics.

Hover a topic's header to fold it, rename it, or add a competitor straight into it. A topic with no competitors shows "No competitors yet." with its own Add competitor button.

How visibility is scored

On Prompts, the Visibility Score Rank card ranks you against your competitors.

  • A brand's Visibility score is the share of AI answers that name it. ByDefault scores each brand on its own, so several brands can sit near 100%.
  • A competitor pinned to topics only counts answers to prompts in those topics. With all topics in view, its row shows those topic names.
  • The big number is your rank. The badge beside it shows how many spots you moved since the previous period.
  • The Visibility Score chart next to it draws each brand's score day by day.

A competitor shows 0% until an answer names it. Your prompts run every day, so new answers arrive daily.

Where competitors show up

Prompts table

The Brand mentions column shows you and each row's competitors, in color when named and grey when not.

Prompt details

Click a prompt for its own Visibility Score Rank. Open an answer to see which competitors it named, and why.

Content Gaps

The Brand mentions column and its filter use the same list.

When you open an answer, Brands in this answer lists you and your competitors first, with the reason for each mention. Other brands the answer named sit under Also referenced. If one keeps showing up there, add it as a competitor.
